The Baden-Württemberg Life Science Accelerator was created through the joint commitment of the Economic and Structural Support of the City of Mannheim, the MAFINEX Gründerverbund eV, the non-profit foundation for medical innovations in Tübingen, the Heidelberg Startup Partners e.V. and the Technologiepark Heidelberg GmbH.

Through the cooperation of the founder associations and research facilities, the founding scene in Baden-Württemberg is supposed to be strengthened and the attractiveness of the partner cities as start-up locations to be increased. The Accelerator consists of three modules: „Medical Innovations Explorer“, „Medtech Startup School“ and the „Startup Booster“.

In the first module „Medical Innovations Explorer“ medical problems, needs and ideas are first identified at research facilities and clinics through various channels: There is an innovation competition once a year, a »HeathDesign Workshop« including job shadowing in the University Hospital (takes place weekly during the semester), and »Open MedTech Innovation Days«, where you can take part in the whole precess from identifying need, finding solution and drafting a first business model in different concise manners.

The „MedTech Startup School“ as a second module, is an intensive 100 day innovation and entrepreneurship training inspired by the Lean Launchpad for Life Science and Healthcare that supports students and scientists in the transformation of innovative ideas into validated business models. This is an excellent starting point for the further steps like writing a business plan, searching for public fundings, investors, and further developing their products. There is also support from doctors, scientists, mentors and industrial partners.

The intensive „Startup Booster“ qualification program, as a third module, helps startup teams in the pre-seed or seed phase to further accelerate and optimize their development process. The team provides experts from industry and research and helps them to find suitable partners, to develop sustainable business plans and to present them to investors. The accompanying seminar program includes, among other things, the necessary business management knowledge, presentation training and „business model innovation“ principles.
